Listening Sessions Provided Another Opportunity for InputPosted by: Brad Buchanan

Denver City Council joined the Denver Planning Board in hosting two Listening Sessions to take public comment on the New Code.  Six hours of public testimony were provided by 148 citizens at the Listening Sessions on November 18th and 19th.

City Council and Planning Board will use the results of the listening sessions to inform the next and final draft of the New Code.  The Listening Sessions were one of many opportunities that have been provided for public input. Others include:

  • More than 50 meetings last summer sponsored throughout Denver neighborhoods.
  • Dozens of subsequent meetings and workshops with representatives from neighborhoods and the business community.
  • More than 3,700 people have attended our meetings prior to the "Listening Sessions".
  • "Office Hour" sessions with Community Planning and Development staff were scheduled in November to answer specific questions from more than 100 individuals interested in how the New Code would affect their properties.
  • The New Code Denver website, which has received more than 26,000 unduplicated visitors.

A variety of issues were discussed at the Listening Sessions.  They included: the timing of the re-zoning process; solar access; embedded neighborhood businesses, accessory dwelling units (ADUs), property rights, hospital and campus zoning, parking, down-zoning, urban agriculture, setbacks, building heights, lighting, and the preservation of historic neighborhoods.

Video of the listening sessions is available online at www.DenverGov.Org by clicking on "Denver 8 Online".
